Art Rotterdam: Conversations That Matter and the Artists Behind the Work

A Talk on Equality in the Art World

Art Rotterdam became the stage for an important and necessary conversation. Our Director, Alejandra Castro Rioseco, took part in a panel discussion at Art Rotterdam addressing an ongoing reality that the art world cannot afford to ignore: the slow and uneven progress toward gender equality in the arts.

“What is happening with our society that it is not evolving towards equality?”

That question, posed by Alejandra during the talk, cuts to the heart of something MIA Art Collection thinks about every day. While it is encouraging to see more women artists present in exhibitions and art schools, the numbers tell a more complex story — progress exists, but it moves far too slowly. Visibility is not yet equity, and representation is not yet recognition. These are the conversations we must keep having, in spaces like Art Rotterdam, until the gap is closed.

Getting to Know the Artists

But a fair is never just about panels and institutions. The best part of being present at Art Rotterdam was something far more personal: the opportunity to meet the artists themselves — to hear their stories, understand their dreams, learn what drives them, and discover what they pour into every work they create.

At MIA Art Collection, artists are not simply the source of what we collect. They are the reason we exist. They are the driving force behind everything we do — and moments like these, spent in genuine conversation with the people behind the work, remind us exactly why this mission matters.
